Samsung next month is expected to introduce a 'BD-Live' Blu-ray player for $499, according to Video Business.
The player, model BD-P2500, will be able to play BD-Live features -- Internet-enabled bonus items such as movie trailers, games and ringtones -- without future firmware upgrades, the publication reports.
Current BD-Live Blu-ray players, such as the Sony BDP-S350, will require an upgrade to display the interactive features. The Samsung BD-P2500 will be able to display the features immediately.
While the $499 price tag may be steep for high-def owners looking for lower Blu-ray prices, the immediate BD-Live feature may appeal to enthusiasts.
Pioneer and Panasonic also recently announced that they will soon introduce Blu-ray players that do not require upgrades to display BD-Live features, but they will be priced at $2,200 and $699 respectively.
Manufacturers and the movie studios are hoping the interactive features will help spark the Blu-ray high-def industry which has experienced so-so sales this year following its victory over HD DVD.
Video Business reports that the BD-P2500 will include 1 GB of internal flash memory and a USB port for memory expansion.
“The BD-P2500 Blu-ray player represents the very best technology the industry has to offer,” said Samsung's Reid Sullivan, according to Video Business. “Consumers will enjoy a truly immersive, full HD viewing experience that delivers the broad spectrum of high definition sights and sounds that can now be experienced with the combination of Blu-ray and the latest HDTVs."
