Buffalo has announced that they will release the first 8X Blu-ray burner in Japan next month. Both the external (BR-816SU2) and internal (BR-816FBS) versions of the drive are based off the Panasonic SW-5584 Blu-ray drive. The internal drive will connect via SATA, while owners of the external drive can connect either via USB 2.0 (limited to 6.5X) or eSATA.
In March the Blu-ray Disc Association approved of write speeds up to 6X (v1.3), but they have yet to approve of the media recording at 8X. It is yet to be seen if the BDA will approve 8X speed before the drive gets release.
When the drives are released, the external version will retail for 46,700¥ while the internal version will go for 41,000¥.
Which would be about $434.95 (American) for the external and $381.86 (American) for the internal? (using online currency converter) Not cheap, but 8X would be pretty dang fast.
