Onkyo, who once produced HD DVD players for the now defunct format, has announced it will release a Blu-ray Disc player by the end of 2008. The player will be 1080p compatible (I would hope so) and HDMI capable. For audio the player is supposed to support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Onkyo is a Japan based consumer electronics manufacturer which specializes in home theatre and audio equipment. In 2007 the company introduced the TX -SR805, the first THX Ultra 2 approved 7.1 channel HDMI 1.3 AV Receiver

Washington, D.C. (July 8, 2008) -- Onkyo, which backed HD DVD in the high-def format war, says it will introduce a Blu-ray player late this year.

The company had sold an HD DVD player, but pulled the plug on future production in the spring when Toshiba, the principal HD DVD supporter, said it was leaving the business.

Onkyo did not offer specific launch dates or pricing details for its Blu-ray player.

But it said the player will include full HDMI processing of 1080p video and decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Surround Sound formats.
