The disc's fans are increasingly turning to those two retailers

Washington, D.C. (July 2008) -- Blu-ray enthusiasts are increasingly buying their players and discs at Amazon.com and Wal-Mart, according to the NPD Group, as reported by Video Business.

While Best Buy remains the top Blu-ray shopping destination, Amazon and Wal-Mart have jumped to second and third, a NPD survey shows.

“While Best Buy is still the leader, the percent of people who are saying that Amazon.com and Wal-Mart (is their top Blu-ray retailer) is growing at a much faster pace than average,” NPD analyst Russ Crupnick told Video Business.

NPD reports that Target finished fourth in the rankings, which were based on a March survey, while Blockbuster was fifth. Interestingly, Circuit City, which finished fourth in a 2007 NPD survey, did not finish in the top five in the March report.

NPD also did not provide specific survey percentages, according to Video Business.

But the research group cited Amazon's aggressive Blu-ray marketing for its rankings climb.
“All the efforts that Amazon.com has put into the category are paying off. They are always running a lot of specials,” Crupnick told Video Business. “Also, their customer profile is just dead-on for Blu-ray. It has an early adopter demographic, higher income and educational level.”

Amazon often offers discounts on both Blu-ray players and discs. Wal-Mart also recently offered a $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player.
